NEEDS STATEMENT
There is a critical need to address unsafe infant sleep in the state of Texas and Houston, specifically. Infant sleep-related death remains the leading cause of non-natural death under the age of 18 years leading to ~80 deaths each year in Houston alone. Despite yearly guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) describing the importance of safe sleep and how to achieve it, parents and healthcare providers alike have continuously demonstrated a lack of adherence. Healthcare providers urgently need the knowledge to understand the importance of safe sleep and the tools to help their patients achieve it. This webinar aims to provide healthcare practitioners with the necessary information to make informed recommendations and place the necessary emphasis on safe sleep with their patients. Quality improvement projects throughout the United States focused on this important risk factor of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome have shown to be effective. We believe that this intervention has the potential to save the lives of tens of infants each year in Houston.
