Needs Statement

There is a critical need to address optimal peripartum care for pregnant and postpartum people with HIV. Careful management of pregnancy is necessary to optimize maternal health and minimize risk of perinatal transmission to the fetus. Special attention must be paid to all aspects of health, medical and social determinants, which impact engagement in care and adherence to antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy.  While perinatal guidelines exist to direct evidence-based care for this population, the guidelines are updated annually, and some providers that care for fewer pregnant patients with HIV may not be aware of the changes. One example of this is the significant changes in guidelines for infant feeding that have been made in the last couple of years. The aim of this conference is to provide updated knowledge, resources, and tools for improving performance for anyone who provides prenatal care, as well as adolescent and adult infectious disease specialists, pediatricians, and anyone else who may work with pregnant or postpartum people with HIV.
