Overview

The majority of Psychotropic medications are prescribed in/by primary care in the United States. However, there has been less and less training on this in primary care training programs, leaving many feeling uncomfortable despite having a lot of patients seen in primary care with psychiatric conditions. An increased comfort level treating the common psychiatric conditions we see can help more patients than otherwise could be seen by psychiatry, and can get patients help sooner.

Some patients, for various reasons (including stigma, access, cost, etc), do not want to see BH for specialty care. Being able to treat some of the common psychiatric conditions in primary care can help these patients.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Evaluate depression and anxiety within a primary care setting, and implement methods for distinguishing them from other potential conditions.
  • Explain the initial treatment choices for depression and anxiety, as well as strategies for addressing issues such as treatment ineffectiveness, lingering symptoms, and adverse effects.
  • Examine distinctions in depression and anxiety concerning special populations, including peripartum women, children, and adolescents.
  • Assess the appropriate timing to provide treatment to patients either manageable in primary care or awaiting specialized behavioral health care.
