Healing with Intention

Faculty and trainees within the Department of Medicine who are involved in the care of patients need to be regularly updated with the recent advances and guidelines in the fields of internal medicine and quality improvement to increase clinical knowledge, and to implement the advances and guidelines in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes.

Target Audience

Physicians, medical students, fellows, and residents.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Explain the ways in which the medical training model has separated the patient experience from care.

  • Discuss how the provider-patient relationship affects the well-being of both parties.

  • Describe the elements of active listening.

  • Recognize why it is important as a healthcare provider to make a conscious effort to hear patients, understand their concerns, and retain the information they relay.

  • Apply active listening skills in discussions with patients.
