The South East Texas Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (SETxGWEP), was funded in 2019 by the United States’ Health Resources Services Administration to prepare the Southeast Texas region with the training and resources to address the specific concerns of aging adults and their caregivers. Needs Statement

With the growing opioid pandemic, there is a need to educate prescribers on appropriate utilization of opioids in their care of elderly. There is a need to familiarize physicians with the Texas State code requirements regarding proper screening and pain management contracts.

South East Texas Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (SETxGWEP) training promotes the integration of innovative geriatrics approaches and education in care settings that serve older adults to address the training gap in responding to the unique care considerations of older adults.

Target Audience

Physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals that care for older adults.

Evaluation by questionnaire will address program content, presentation, and possible bias.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to: 

  • Introduce the utilization of screening tools in chronic pain patients.
  • Review the prescription drug monitoring program and how it should be utilized as part of a comprehensive patient work up.
  • Discuss the physician-patient pain treatment agreements and how they should be utilized in practice.
  • Incorporate the comprehensive pain management requirements set forth in the Texas Administrative Code.
