Target Audience
This activity is designed for medical examiners, forensic pathology fellows, public health physicians, medical students, forensic anthropologists, toxicologists, and death investigators.
Needs Statement

Practitioners require ongoing education to stay current with the rapidly evolving causes and manners of death, including those resulting from synthetic drugs, internet challenges, and new weapons. They need up-to-date knowledge of forensic trends, investigative techniques, and standards in death certification and manner-of-death classification. This series provides a platform for sharing experiences and research, supporting attendees in keeping pace with new procedures and trends. The educational focus is on enhancing learners’ ability to recognize emerging patterns in scene and autopsy findings, apply consistent and evidence-based judgment in certification, and rapidly disseminate critical information to public health colleagues to prevent further deaths, thereby improving competency and performance in both routine and complex cases.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include lectures, case presentations, literature review, and audience response.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

  • Analyze current trends and developments in causes of death, including those associated with synthetic drugs, internet trends, and new weapons.
  • Identify and interpret scene investigation findings including gross and microscopic autopsy features associated with different causes of death.
  • Actively adapt current best practices and refine investigative and autopsy procedures in response to emerging research and new forensic evidence.
  • Proactively recognize emerging public health threats and collaborate to prevent further deaths through timely and effective information sharing.

Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
