Needs Statement
There is a significant need to improve provider competence in caring for adolescents and adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) due to inadequate training in medical education and pervasive negative attitudes among experienced providers. To address this, this series is a virtual ECHO-style that will enhance provider knowledge and willingness to care for the IDD population. Each session will include expert-led lectures on primary care topics specific to IDD, followed by patient case discussions to develop practical strategies for primary care teams. This initiative is crucial for closing educational gaps and promoting inclusive, quality care for individuals with disabilities.
Target Audience
Practicing physicians (internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine), nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, physician assistants, and other healthcare providers seeing individuals with IDD in the community
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the conference, participants should be able to:
- Develop strategies to support patient navigation and care coordination for the IDD population throughout the lifespan.
- Describe some common co-occurring conditions related to the more common intellectual/ developmental diagnoses (IDD) such as Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, and spina bifida.
- Explore the intersectionality of social determinants of health and intellectual/developmental disability.
Educational Methods
Lecture, Case Study, and ECHO.
Activity Evaluation
Evaluation by questionnaire will address program content, presentation, and possible bias.
