Riding the First Wave of COVID-19 in New York City

This Department of Medicine Grand Rounds event took place on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at 12:15 P.M. Dr. Matthew McCarthy is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and a Staff Physician at New York Presbyterian Hospital, and he serves as a pandemic advisor to the U.S. Army. He was the first COVID-19 attending hospitalist at New York Presbyterian Hospital and was responsible for determining best practices and research protocols.

Target Audience

This CME/CE activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, residents, fellows, and community providers.

Faculty and trainees within the Department of Medicine who are involved in the care of patients need to be regularly updated with the recent advances and guidelines in the fields of internal medicine and quality improvement to increase clinical knowledge, and to implement the advances and guidelines in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Discuss the operational response by New York hospitals to face the COVID-19 pandemic and increase in hospitalizations.

  • Review the clinical controversies in the management of COVID-19.

  • Emphasize the impact on frontline staff when working through the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Review the future developments in managing COVID-19 with therapeutics and vaccines and the role of emergency approvals.
