NEEDS STATEMENT

There is a critical need to address the disparities in genetic services for Hispanic children with rare diseases living along the Texas-Mexico border. Despite the availability of advanced genetic diagnostic tools, these children often experience delayed diagnosis, inadequate care, and poor health outcomes due to a lack of genomic literacy and competence among non-genetics providers in the region. Specifically, there is a knowledge gap in recognizing rare diseases, a competence gap in using genetic diagnostic tools, and a performance gap in referring patients for timely and appropriate care. To bridge these gaps, we will develop and deliver 4 CPE seminars between 2024 and 2026, focusing on rare disease recognition, genomic literacy, and the use of facial recognition technology and Consultagene for expedited referral and diagnosis. By enhancing the knowledge, skills, and performance of front-line healthcare providers, we aim to improve patient care and outcomes for Hispanic children with rare diseases in this underserved region.
