NEEDS STATEMENT
There is a critical need to address the disparities in genetic services for Hispanic children with rare diseases living along the Texas-Mexico border. While advanced genetic diagnostic tools are accessible in other parts of Texas, these services are often scarce in the Rio Grande Valley. Due to multiple access barriers, children with rare diseases in this region frequently encounter delays in diagnosis affecting health outcomes. Increasing familiarity with rare diseases, enhancing the use of genetic diagnostic tools, and ensuring timely referrals for specialized care are essential steps in improving patient care and outcomes for Hispanic children with rare diseases in this underserved region. We will develop and deliver 4 CPE seminars between 2024 and 2026, focusing on rare disease recognition, improving genomic testing awareness, and using a virtual platform, called Consultagene.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity is for pediatricians, neurologists, nurses, nurse practitioners, therapists, medical assistants, and social workers.
