NEEDS STATEMENT
There is a critical need to address disparities in access to genetic services for Hispanic children with rare diseases along the Texas-Mexico border. This conference aims to expedite genetic evaluations for pediatric rare diseases in remote Texas areas to improve health outcomes for affected children. We will explore structural changes in healthcare to reduce health disparities in genomic medicine and examine the ethical challenges healthcare professional’s encounter. Solutions to these disparities and guidelines for referring children for genetic evaluations will be provided, alongside an introduction to Consultagene—a virtual platform designed to alleviate the diagnostic odyssey and enhance access to genetic care. Updates from Project GIVE, a study accelerating genomic evaluation and testing for undiagnosed children in the Rio Grande Valley and El Paso, will also be presented, with case examples of genetic syndromes associated with hearing loss. Increasing familiarity with rare diseases, advancing the use of genetic diagnostic tools, and ensuring timely referrals for specialized care are essential steps to improving patient care and outcomes for Hispanic children with rare diseases in this underserved region.
