Needs Statement

Educational goals for learners in the Emergency Center are to gain knowledge of types of discriminatory acts to better recognize these encounters, and how using narrative medicine facilitates recognizing and addressing psychosocial stress in the workplace.


Target Audience 

This activity is for Pediatric Emergency Medicine Faculty, Fellows, and Advanced Practice Providers.


Educational Methods

Lecture, Case Study, Small Group Breakout Sessions, Role Play


Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

  • Define and recognize types of discriminatory statements: micoraggression, microassault, microinsult, and microinvalidation.  
  • Support team members who experience discriminatory statements.
  • Identify a psychosocially stressful situation in the workplace from personal experience.

Evaluation

Evaluation by questionnaire will address program content, presentation, and possible bias.

The presentation, Recognizing and Responding to Racism in the Clinical Setting, has been designated by Baylor College of Medicine for 3.00 credit of education in medical ethics and/or professional responsibility.

American Board of Pediatrics (ABP)

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the activity and individual assessment of and feedback to the learner, enables the learner to earn up to 4.00 MOC points in the American Board of Pediatrics’ (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit learner completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABP MOC credit.
