Normothermic Machine Perfusion of Pediatric Donors: Meeting the Unmet Need in Pediatric Liver Transplantation
Needs Statement
There is a clear need for training healthcare providers on the use of SIMPL (Society for Improving and Measuring Procedural Learning) as a computer or mobile-accessible evaluation tool. Education should focus on how to conduct timely, structured feedback sessions immediately following surgical procedures. Learners must understand the value of direct feedback in enhancing procedural learning and clinical performance. Additionally, educators need guidance on implementing best practices for formative feedback to ensure consistency and effectiveness across the department.
Target Audience
Physicians, medical students, fellows, and residents.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the history of organ preservation, and the gold standard of UW solution for static cold storage.
- Identify the unmet need for organs for pediatric donors with roughly 200 additional livers needed every year to meet the need of the waitlist.
- Distinguish the potential role for machine perfusion to utilize donation after cardiac death donors.
