Overview

Kidney Transplantation is considered the treatment of choice for many people with severe chronic kidney disease because quality of life and survival are often better than in people who are treated with dialysis. Determining who would benefit from a kidney transplant is very complicated. The ultimate success of a kidney transplant depends on the patient, the community nephrologist, the transplant nephrologist , as well as the transplant surgeon. This CME program will discuss surgical aspects of kidney transplantation as well as provide an update on the new kidney allocation system. An overview of the evaluation process and the role of the community nephrologist will be examined. In addition, recommendations
and resources for post-transplant care will be provided.

Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Hospitalists, Acute Care Specialists, Nephrologists, and APPs

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to: 

  • Identify surgical aspects of kidney transplantation and the allocation of kidneys to patients
  • Summarize the transplant evaluation process 
  • Explain the importance of collaborating with the referring nephrologist to increase the likelihood of a successful organ transplant
  • Utilize resources to overcome challenges in post-transplant management
