Hypertension Management Toolkit and Osteoporosis Management for Women with Fracture Toolkit - July 13, 2023

Houston, TX US
July 13, 2023

NEEDS STATEMENT

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, approximately 10 million Americans have osteoporosis and another 44 million have low bone density. These Americans are at increased risk for fracture. Half of American adults aged 50 and older are at high risk of fracture.  This tallies up to 54 million Americans.

During their lifetime, one in two women and up to one in four men will break a bone in their lifetime due to the condition of osteoporosis. This risk in women is greater than the incidence of breast cancer, heart attack or stroke combined. Secondary prevention of fractures through the appropriate diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis is important.  It aids in the prevention of future fractures, improves mobility, quality of life and independence. In addition, secondary prevention reduces mortality risk.

Hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke and heart attack, both of which are leading causes of death in the US. Roughly half of the adult US population have hypertension and on average $131 billion dollars is spent due to high blood pressure. Several studies have been conducted showing the impact high blood pressure has on the patient population. There is reduction of risk of mortality and cardiovascular events when treated for systolic blood pressure 160mm of Hg or more (primary prevention). In patients with coronary heart disease systolic blood pressure control less than 140mm of Hg is associated with reduced risk of future cardiovascular events.  There is reduction of risk of mortality and cardiovascular events when treated for systolic blood pressure 160mm of Hg or more (primary prevention).
