Hypertension Management Toolkit
Needs Statement
Hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke and heart attack, both of which are leading causes of death in the US. Roughly half of the adult US population have hypertension and on average $131 billion dollars is spent due to high blood pressure. Several studies have been conducted showing the impact high blood pressure has on the patient population. There is reduction of risk of mortality and cardiovascular events when treated for systolic blood pressure 160mm of Hg or more (primary prevention). In patients with coronary heart disease systolic blood pressure control less than 140mm of Hg is associated with reduced risk of future cardiovascular events.
