The South East Texas Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program (SETxGWEP), was funded in 2019 by the United States’ Health Resources Services Administration to prepare the Southeast Texas region with the training and resources to address the specific concerns of aging adults and their caregivers. Needs Statement
This enduring activity is aimed to educate non-geriatric professionals in recognizing and addressing geriatric mental health concerns that can exacerbate physician health conditions. This course will identify common symptoms and characteristics, review the psychiatric co-morbidities, and identify appropriate screening tools for late life depression in older adults.
Target Audience
This activity is for Physicians, Physician Assistants, Social Workers or other healthcare professionals involved in the care of older adults.
Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
- Identify common symptoms and characteristics of late life depression in older adults
- Explain the relationship between late life depression and psychiatric co-morbidities, including suicide risk
- Identify the challenges in assessing depression and appropriate screening tools to diagnose late life depression
- Distinguish important factors in prescribing anti-depressants
