GIVE: Rio Grande Valley Seminar - September 23, 2023
NEEDS STATEMENT
Inequalities in genetic services for the care of Hispanic children with rare diseases living along the Texas-Mexico border has long been a major health concern. Rare genetic diseases are frequently disabling and often reduce life expectancy, either causing early childhood death, life-threatening medical complications, and/or chronic neurodevelopmental problems. Lack of knowledge regarding ascertainment and evaluation of genetic diseases is a critical barrier in providing timely diagnoses to children in this population. Our ultimate goal is to accelerate genetics evaluation of pediatric rare diseases in the remote marginalized areas of Texas and establish an infrastructure that provides disease-appropriate care to the affected children. In order to increase genomic literacy of non-genetics providers, we will develop 2 CPE seminars. These seminars will be focused on recognition of rare diseases in the pediatric community. The activity will help build genomic competency of front-line healthcare providers through use of facial recognition technology and education to expedite referral of pediatric patients with suspected rare diseases. We will educate them in using an internally developed virtual tool called Consulta gene for patient referral. In addition, we will train learners in employing machine assisted Face2Gene app in clinics for ascertainment of patients suspected to have genetic disorders.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity is for pediatricians, neurologists, nurses, nurse practitioners, therapists, medical assistants, and social workers.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be able to:
- Discuss the potential solutions to address health care disparities in genomic medicine.
- Explain the benefits and challenges in using the Face2gene app to recognize certain genetic disorders in a clinical practice setting.
- Identify structural changes to improve healthcare and reduce health disparities.
EDUCATIONAL METHODS
Lecture and skill-based training workshop
EVALUATION
Evaluation by questionnaire will address program content, presentation, and possible bias.
