Needs Statement

A course designed for physicians, trainees, and allied health professionals with interest or clinical practice in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. This course will serve as an update on latest diagnostic and therapeutic issues in GI and Hepatology. This program has been developed using a combination of lecture and case based curriculum designed to serve as an intensive review tool for GI and Hepatology Board Certification/Re-Certification Examination in 2025.

Target Audience

Physicians, trainees, and health professionals with interest or clinical practice in Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the conference, participants should be able to:

  • Evaluate and manage esophageal disorders including esophageal motility and functional disorders, GERD and reflux testing, Barrett's esophagus and esophageal neoplasms, and esophageal conditions such as foreign body impaction, eosinophilic esophagitis, and esophageal infections.
  • Diagnose and manage gastric conditions including non-variceal upper GI bleeding and peptic ulcer disease, gastric motility and functional disorders, subepithelial lesions (gastric polyps, stromal tumors, and gastric neuroendocrine tumors), and gastric cancer with associated mucosal disorders such as intestinal metaplasia and Helicobacter pylori infection.
  • Recognize and manage small bowel and inflammatory conditions including chronic diarrhea, celiac disease, small bowel infections, benign and malignant small bowel neoplasms, vascular disorders of the small bowel, inflammatory bowel disease, and non-IBD colitis.
  • Evaluate and manage colorectal conditions including colorectal motility and functional disorders (IBS and SIBO), colon polyps, colorectal cancer, hereditary colorectal cancer and polyposis syndromes, and diverticular disease with lower GI bleeding.
  • Diagnose and manage pancreaticobiliary disorders including pancreatic neoplasms and cysts, acute and chronic pancreatitis, and gallbladder and biliary disease.
  • Identify and manage parenchymal and metabolic liver diseases including primary sclerosing cholangitis, autoimmune hepatitis, drug-induced liver injury, vascular liver disease, inherited liver diseases (iron overload, Wilson disease, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, cystic fibrosis, and sickle cell hepatopathy), steatotic liver disease (MASLD), viral hepatitis, liver histopathology, and liver masses.
  • Evaluate and manage acute and decompensated liver disease including acute liver failure, liver transplantation, liver disease in pregnancy, and complications of portal hypertension such as variceal bleeding, ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, hepatorenal syndrome, and portopulmonary hypertension.
  • Apply principles of informed consent, medical ethics, and biostatistics to clinical decision-making and evidence-based practice in gastroenterology and hepatology.
