Needs Statement

A course designed for physicians, trainees, and allied health professionals with interest or clinical practice in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. This course will serve as an update on latest diagnostic and therapeutic issues in GI and Hepatology. This program has been developed using a combination of lecture and case based curriculum designed to serve as an intensive review tool for GI and Hepatology Board Certification/Re-Certification Examination in 2025.

Target Audience

Physicians, trainees, and health professionals with interest or clinical practice in Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the conference, participants should be able to:

  • Summarize the strategies for the management of IBS-D.
  • Discuss early detection of esophageal cancer and effective screening methods for high-risk patients.
  • Identify tailored approaches to optimizing medical therapy in inflammatory bowel disease..
  • Compare and contrast current therapy options for patients with viral hepatitis and drugs in the clinical development pipeline.
  • Develop the appropriate management strategies for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in clinical practice.
  • Identify appropriate diagnostic testing and treatment for H. pylori infection.
  • Implement treatment algorithms for clarithromycin resistant H pylori infection.
  • Determine the appropriate treatment for Hepatitis B patients based on the interpretations of Hepatitis B serologic testing results.
  • Summarize the major ethical principles in medicine and how to apply them into gastroenterology practice.
  • Describe the classification, diagnostic evaluation, and risk stratification of pancreatic cystic lesions, and outline evidence-based management strategies based on current clinical guidelines.
  • Identify the common causes and pathophysiology of chronic constipation, differentiate between functional subtypes, and outline evidence-based diagnostic and management strategies, including lifestyle, pharmacologic, and procedural interventions.
  • Explain the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and complications of GERD, and describe the diagnosis, risk factors, and evidence-based management strategies for Barrett’s esophagus, including surveillance and cancer prevention.
  • Evaluate the role of GLP-1 receptor agonists in the management of obesity and GI/metabolic disorders relevant to gastroenterology practice.
  • Differentiate indications, techniques, and outcomes of EMR versus ESD for gastrointestinal neoplasia and apply guideline-based decision-making in clinical scenarios.
  • Apply current guidelines and evidence-based strategies for risk stratification, timing, and endoscopic management of acute gastrointestinal bleeding.
  • Develop an evidence-based approach to the diagnosis and treatment of primary biliary cholangitis and other cholestatic liver diseases.

Evaluation by questionnaire will address program content, presentation, and possible bias.
