Ethical Considerations for Intraoperative Research

Needs Statement

There is a clear need for training healthcare providers on the use of SIMPL (Society for Improving and Measuring Procedural Learning) as a computer or mobile-accessible evaluation tool. Education should focus on how to conduct timely, structured feedback sessions immediately following surgical procedures. Learners must understand the value of direct feedback in enhancing procedural learning and clinical performance. Additionally, educators need guidance on implementing best practices for formative feedback to ensure consistency and effectiveness across the department.

Target Audience

Physicians, medical students, fellows, and residents.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the activity, the participants should be able to:
  • Distinguish the ethical obligations of surgeons in their role as clinician versus researcher.
  • Identify situations in intraoperative research that present particular ethical challenges regarding surgeon-scientist duality.
  • Describe strategies for improving ethical transparency for intraoperative research.
