Education Hackathon Keynote 2022
Needs Statement
Despite overwhelming evidence that active learning pedagogies produce better educational outcomes, traditional lecturing remains the dominant mode of instruction in medical education. This workshop and presentation will be focused on educating medical instructors on the benefits of active learning strategies. The goal is to improve attendees’ knowledge of the benefits of active learning for teaching medical students and trainees as well as to strive toward competence in adopting active learning methods in their own teaching practice. This will involve presentation of the relevant science education literature followed by a workshop where attendees will generate their own ideas for how to incorporate what they have learned in their own courses.
Target Audience
Faculty, residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, and students from all disciplines.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the conference, participants should be able to:
- Articulate the differences between traditional instruction and active learning pedagogical practices.
- Summarize the evidence for incorporating active learning for teaching medical trainees.
- Identify areas of teaching content where active learning methods can be applied.
