Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be able to:
- Identify the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder and distinguish it from other mood disorders.
- Apply DSM-5 criteria to recognize depression in pediatric patients.
- Describe key risk factors and clinical features associated with depression in children/adolescents.
- Perform a comprehensive initial assessment for pediatric depression, including relevant history and symptom evaluation.
- Conduct screening for suicide and non-suicidal self-injury using validated tools and develop a basic safety plan.
- Differentiate between evidence-based non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions for pediatric depression treatment.
