Needs Statement
The Department of Surgery Transition-to-Practice Program focuses on equipping early-career advanced practice providers with essential nonclinical competencies that support safe, effective, and collaborative care. Identified through learner feedback, faculty observation, and institutional priorities, these competencies include strengthening professional communication and interprofessional collaboration, introducing foundational principles of quality improvement and patient safety, and developing leadership skills for team-based environments. Additionally, the program addresses emotional intelligence and resilience to mitigate stress and the imposter syndrome, provides guidance on career development and mentorship, and offers practical instruction in billing, coding, and legal or ethical considerations. Each session uses interactive, case-based learning to foster application of these skills, aligning with adult learning principles and institutional priorities for workforce readiness and quality care.
Educational Methods
Educational methods will include lectures.
Objectives
At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:
- Describe key components of effective professional communication, including strategies for interprofessional collaboration and conflict resolution within clinical teams.
- Demonstrate the ability to apply emotional intelligence principles and structured communication techniques (e.g., SBAR, closed-loop communication) during simulated team-based clinical scenarios.
- Consistently utilize effective communication, documentation, and leadership skills in daily practice to enhance patient safety, team dynamics, and workflow efficiency.
