Target Audience
This activity is designed for physicians, advanced practice providers, fellows, residents, nurses, social workers, dieticians, and therapists at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital involved in the care of neonatal patients.
Needs Statement

Learners require education that enhances their understanding of public health principles and the domains of social drivers affecting neonatal health. This includes training in trauma-informed communication, culturally sensitive screening practices, and collaborative care strategies that prioritize family engagement. Educational interventions must improve provider competence in identifying social risks, initiating respectful conversations, and coordinating referrals to community resources. Learners also need tools to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and track equity-focused outcomes. Emphasis should be placed on building trust, reducing stigma, and integrating social care into routine NICU workflows. The focused educational platform will include interactive presentation and discussion of strategic integration of social driver assessments into high-acuity clinical care. The information gained in this series is expected to improve patient-centered care, foster effective discharge planning, and provide professional insight into the social factors that affect neonatal health risks and outcomes.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include lectures, case presentations, literature review, panel discussion, and audience response.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

  • Identify the social drivers of health that affect neonatal health outcomes.
  • Analyze health-related social needs that increase health outcome risks, affect quality patient care, and contribute to effective transition to home.
  • Implement collaborative strategies to enhance awareness among multidisciplinary providers and coordinate targeted interventions that address social drivers of health throughout the Newborn Center.

Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
