Target Audience and Needs

Faculty physicians, fellows, and other trainees in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery who are involved in patient care need to receive regular updates on seminal studies and clinical trials involving diseases that manifest in the thoracic cavity.  The series aims to evaluate the current medical literature to identify evidence-based trends in cardiothoracic surgical treatments to enhance the knowledge and skills of division staff members and improve cardiothoracic surgical practice and patient outcomes.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include literature review.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

• Distinguish changes in the recent literature that may affect current practice guidelines.
• Critically appraise select studies in the medical literature.
• Analyze the statistical methods used in the studies reviewed.
• Identify usable data that may indicate a change in practice patterns.

Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
