Target Audience and Needs

Otolaryngologists, fellows, residents, and medical students who are involved in patient care need to review the near-miss and adverse events that occur in otolaryngology practice.  The series aims to use the Quality Improvement Classification System (QICS) to categorize near-miss and adverse events, to distinguish the factors that contribute to their occurrence, and to identify evidence-based guidance for their management and prevention.  The series also aims to expand the knowledge of learners, enhance the quality of care for patients with diseases of the head and neck, and improve patient outcomes.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include case presentations, literature review, and panel discussion.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

  • Categorize near-miss and adverse events using the Quality Improvement Classification System (QICS).
  • Explain whether a near-miss or adverse event occurred because of provider-related, patient-related, or system-based factors.
  • Identify areas for improvement based on the type of near-miss or adverse event.
  • Develop strategies to safeguard patient privacy and promote safety throughout the course of treatment.

Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
