Needs Statement
Healthcare professionals and trainees managing pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) require regular updates on clinical research, technological advances, and evolving practice guidelines. There is a need for education on risk assessment models, anticoagulation strategies, and the interpretation of laboratory and clinical data to optimize patient outcomes. Practitioners must be equipped to evaluate evidence supporting guideline recommendations, implement practice changes, and identify research priorities. Given the complexity of anti-coagulation management, clinicians need to understand the advantages, disadvantages, and monitoring strategies for each agent. Education should also address the limitations of current monitoring techniques, the management of bleeding and thrombotic complications, and the importance of individualized, patient-centered care. This series aims to foster multidisciplinary collaboration and continuous learning to identify research priorities and to enhance the quality and safety of ECMO care.
Educational Methods
Educational methods will include lectures, case presentations, and panel discussion.
Objectives
At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:
- Recognize differences in cannulation techniques based on disease type, vascular anatomy, and expected duration of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support.
- Describe the basic components of the coagulation system and best practices for utilizing currently available anticoagulants, with attention to monitoring and management strategies.
- Apply best practices in daily care for pediatric ECMO patients, including ventilator management, nutrition, rehabilitation, weaning of the circuit, and troubleshooting component failures, among other treatment considerations.
- Formulate strategies for multidisciplinary collaboration and communication to address complex clinical scenarios, facilitate knowledge sharing, and establish research priorities in pediatric ECMO care.
Evaluation
Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
