Needs Statement
Nephrologists require ongoing education to stay current with the important new and landmark research studies in their field, develop strong skills in critically appraising medical literature, and to learn how to effectively apply research results and new evidence to clinical practice. Seminars in Evidence-Based Nephrology address these educational needs by facilitating interactive group discussions focused on recent and classic research publications. These sessions place each study in the context of the broader literature, explore the scientific content and methodology, and actively examine how the findings can be applied to patient care and inform clinical decision-making. Drawing on modern redesigns of the traditional journal club format which include regularly scheduled meetings, high attendance, clear objectives, and a trained leader, Seminars in Evidence-Based Nephrology is designed to maximize learner engagement by setting tangible goals focused on clinical nephrology, preparing the presenter thoroughly in advance of the session, and implementing design features to maximize participation in discussions.
Educational Methods
Educational methods will include literature review and panel discussion.
Objectives
At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:
- Critically evaluate new and classic literature in nephrology to identify key findings and implications for clinical practice.
- Describe basic study design, methods, and limitations of research studies.
- Apply literature to clinical contexts to inform patient management and decision-making.
Evaluation
Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
