Target Audience and Needs

Clinicians and other healthcare professionals in general internal medicine, and internal medicine and surgical subspecialties at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center need to be regularly updated with best practices, recent advances and guidelines in the fields of hospital medicine, general internal medicine, multidisciplinary care, and coordination of transitions in care. The conference aims to increase knowledge of the learners in these topics, and to implement the advances and guidelines in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include lecture, case presentations, and literature review.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

  • Discuss best practices according to updated literature/research in conjunction with clinical expertise in order to provide optimal patient care.
  • Identify potential situations for errors and hazards in patient care, and outline the hospital's ongoing quality improvement initiatives to mitigate these gaps.
  • Advocate for disease prevention, wellness, and promotion of healthy lifestyles, with a focus on population health.
  • Cooperate, collaborate, integrate care, and make use of interdisciplinary teams to ensure patient care that is continuous and reliable.
  • Summarize the elements of I-PASS for standardized hand-offs and develop a strategy to implement I-PASS handoffs in their clinical practice.
