Target Audience and Needs

Physicians, fellows, residents, medical students and other healthcare providers and trainees across medical specialties encounter health equity issues.  The series serves as a forum to discuss these issues by covering select topics such as health disparities, social determinants of health, cultural sensitivities, linguistic competencies, and social justice.  It aims to broaden the awareness of learners in these topic areas and provide strategies to address health equity issues as they arise.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include lectures, case presentations, literature review, and panel discussion.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

  • Identify specific diseases that disproportionately affect underserved and vulnerable populations.
  • Describe the role of social determinants of health across the lifespan.
  • Explain effective education, research, clinical care, and community outreach solutions for improving health equity.
  • Outline evidence-based methodological approaches to address the policy, quality improvement, and assessment issues associated with the mitigation of health inequities and limited access to healthcare.

Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
