Series Director

Michael E. Speer, MD

Target Audience
This series is designed for physicians, fellows, residents, nurses, social workers, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals who are involved in neonatal palliative care.
Needs Statement
This series is directed at those who specialize in neonatal palliative care and need to receive regular updates on evidence-based practices and guidelines for managing pain and other symptoms in neonates with life-threatening or life-limiting medical conditions. Experts will review complex cases as an impetus for discussion of team-based neonatal palliative care and of how to care for the needs of family members.  The series aims to expand the knowledge of learners and to improve their skills in guiding family decision-making, discussing advance care planning, and providing neonatal care that meets the social, cultural, and spiritual needs of family members in the end-of-life setting.

Palliative care involves sensitive, interdisciplinary topics such as symptom management, communication, ethics, and end-of-life decision-making. The lecture format supports clear presentation of core principles, current guidelines, and best practices, ensuring participants receive a solid foundation for clinical application. Finally, lectures promote the desired results by equipping healthcare professionals with knowledge they can immediately apply in patient care, fostering confidence in addressing complex needs, and encouraging consistent, compassionate, and evidence-based practice across disciplines.
