Target Audience and Needs

Physicians, residents, fellows, medical students, and nurse practitioners in a pediatric or neonatology specialty involved in the care of neonates use this conference as a venue to present their cases for review and discussion with an ethicist to resolve outstanding care issues and to form an ethical basis for decisions. The series also aims to increase knowledge of the learners on the role of ethics in clinical decision-making and to encourage learners to apply ethical principles in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and improve patient outcomes.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include lectures, case presentations, and panel discussion.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

  • Identify the role that ethics should play in the decision making process in the complex neonatal patient with life-threatening conditions.
  • Inform both the general pediatrician and the pediatric subspecialist of ethical concepts that must be examined as fiduciary of the patient.
  • Incorporate ethical principles into the daily care of ill neonates to improve the care provided to those infants.
  • Develop strategies to address the medical, ethical, and legal issues impacting treatment decisions in the NICU.
  • Recognize the need for and utilize the hospital ethics consult service.
Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
