Target Audience and Needs

Physicians, residents, fellows, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other healthcare providers who care for neonates need to receive regular updates regarding evidence-based practices and advances in ECMO/iNO therapy and advanced respiratory ventilation.  Cases involving a wide variety of neonatal diseases will be used as an impetus to discuss complex management, the ethical dilemmas underlying therapy, and response to ECMO/iNO emergencies.  The series aims to expand the knowledge of learners, improve their clinical skills and competencies, enhance the quality of neonatal care, and improve patient outcomes.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include lectures and case presentations.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

  • Diagnose and treat the underlying disease for patients treated with ECMO or iNO.
  • Analyze and discuss ECMO/iNO problem cases.
  • Examine the ethical and moral dilemmas that accompany the management of patients undergoing ECMO/iNO therapy.
  • Identify which patients would benefit from ECMO or iNO therapy.
  • Complete a written test and demonstrate emergency preparedness skills to an ECMO perfusionist.

Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
