Series Director
Jaime Ortiz, MD, MBA
Target Audience
Anesthesiologists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, student nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners, certified anesthesiology assistants, and anesthesiology fellows, residents, and medical students.
Needs Statement
Anesthesiologists and other anesthesia healthcare providers and trainees need greater awareness of preoperative risk management, particularly in patients with comorbidities and complex medical conditions that require optimization before surgery and anesthesia. They also need to be better prepared for medical crises that depend on their expertise and interaction with multidisciplinary teams. However, they are often unsure about how to interpret current professional guidelines and the results of landmark clinical trials to identify the best evidence to integrate into anesthesia practice. The series aims to improve critical appraisal of research studies, promote evidence-based anesthesia practice across a variety of illnesses and patient conditions, and enhance clinical decision-making and the formulation of safe and effective anesthetic plans. The series also aims to encourage the application of quality improvement and patient safety principles to anesthesia care, the identification of ethical issues in anesthesia practice, and the fulfillment of professional responsibilities in difficult practice situations.
Educational Methods
Educational methods will include lectures, case presentations, literature review, panel discussion, and audience response.
Objectives
At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:
- Identify key pathophysiologic mechanisms relevant to anesthetic practice.
- Recognize system-based challenges and propose strategies to improve safety and efficiency.
- Communicate effectively with other specialists regarding anesthetic concerns.
Evaluation
Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
