2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19): Overview and Current State of the Outbreak
In this first presentation of a five-part COVID-19 series, Dr. Prathit Kulkarni, M.D. and Dr. Robert Atmar, M.D. discuss the emerging COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Kulkarni gives background information on the outbreak and discusses transmission dynamics and clinical characteristics and outcomes of this disease. Dr. Atmar discusses the virology of the infection, potential therapeutic options, and possible vaccine development. Both physicians answer remote audience questions at the end of the presentation.
After March 19th, Department of Medicine Grand Rounds will be temporarily suspended for at least one month. We look forward to resuming when feasible.
Target Audience
This CME/CE activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, residents, fellows, and community providers.
Faculty and trainees within the Department of Medicine who are involved in the care of patients need to be regularly updated with the recent advances and guidelines in the fields of internal medicine and quality improvement to increase clinical knowledge, and to implement the advances and guidelines in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
Summarize the evidence on the role of antivirals and immunomodulators in COVID-19 management.
Describe the clinical presentation of mild-to-moderate COVID-19.
Illustrate atypical presentations of COVID-19.
Describe the clinical symptoms of COVID-19 as associated with pathophysiology.
Explain the individualized approach that COVID-19 patients require to be managed in the ICU.
