Smoothing Out the Glucose Peaks and Troughs in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Technology Update

In this presentation, Dr. Siripoom McKay, M.D. discusses the latest technological advances in blood glucose testing for patients with type 1 diabetes. She discusses the benefits of tight glucose control in this patient population and offers some insight as to how the disease can be better managed in certain vulnerable and high-risk patient populations.

Target Audience

This CME/CE activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, residents, fellows, and community providers.

Faculty and trainees within the Department of Medicine who are involved in the care of patients need to be regularly updated with the recent advances and guidelines in the fields of internal medicine and quality improvement to increase clinical knowledge, and to implement the advances and guidelines in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Interpret and use continuous glucose monitoring data in clinical care.

  • Discuss the features of the current near closed-loop insulin pumps.

  • Discuss the key individuals who need to be taught how to identify severe abnormal glucose values to support the patient.

  • Utilize nasal glucagon for the treatment of severe hypoglycemia.
