Healthcare at the Crossroads: Sustaining Humanistic Traditions in Today's Practice Environment

In this presentation, Dr. William T. Branch, Professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine, discusses humanistic medical practice. He cites the definition of humanism as denoting an intrinsic set of deep-seated convictions about one’s obligations toward others. Dr. Branch discusses factors that promote a doctor taking a humanistic approach to medicine, as well as barriers doctors face in doing so. He shares data and conclusions from several studies surveying the effects that practicing medical humanism has on doctors’ well-being.
