Assessment of Professionalism as an Obligation for Self-regulation

In this presentation, Dr. Maxine A. Papadakis, Professor Emeritus, Department of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, discusses professionalism in medical education and clinical practice. She begins by describing the history of her involvement in shaping professionalism standards in medical education and licensing in the United States. She discusses several studies that her team conducted in the area of medical student and physician professionalism. She also highlights the need for the longitudinal assessment of professionalism and the need for remediation for those experiencing lapses, and offers her recommendations for teaching professionalism.

Target Audience

This CME/CE activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, residents, fellows, and community providers.

Faculty and trainees within the Department of Medicine who are involved in the care of patients need to be regularly updated with the recent advances and guidelines in the fields of internal medicine and quality improvement to increase clinical knowledge, and to implement the advances and guidelines in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Discuss the potential link between unprofessional behavior during training and disciplinary actions by licensing boards of practicing physicians.

  • Compare the concept of “professionalism” to professional behaviors in medical students and residents.

  • Compare the concept of “professionalism” to institutional obligations in the educational environment.
