Complications of Hospitalization in the Elderly

In this presentation, Dr. Angela Catic, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, Section of Geriatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, discusses the risks associated with the hospitalization of elderly patients, as well as the steps that health care teams can take to prevent and address adverse events in this patient population.

Patients over 70 years of age face high rates of delirium, functional decline, and adverse drug events when they are admitted to the hospital. Dr. Catic discusses the widespread incidence of delirium in elderly patients across multiple hospital settings, as well as the high mortality rates in these patients after they are discharged. She reviews the diagnosis and non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic treatments for delirium, and discusses measures used to prevent delirium and loss of function in elderly patients with particular focus on the role of inpatient care teams.
