Left to My Own Devices: Updates for 2018

In this presentation, Dr. Wilson Lam, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Section of Pediatric Cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine, discusses the safety and possible effects of MRI in patients with cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIED). There are more than 2 million patients in the United Stated who have pacemakers or defibrillators. Of these, 50-75% will need an MRI. Dr. Lam describes studies that assess the risks of performing MRIs in patients with CIEDs, and highlights those effects which have been reported more frequently in studies and in clinical practice. He reviews the most recent guidelines for health care providers considering performing an MRI in patients with CIEDs.

During the second part of his presentation, Dr. Lam analyzes the guidelines for prescribing prophylactic antimicrobials for patients with pacemakers who are undergoing invasive procedures to reduce the risk of endocarditis. He also reviews the recommendations for prophylaxis before and during the implant, and post-operative care.
