Surgical Quality Improvement: Moving the Needle or Measuring for the Sake of Measurement

In this presentation, Dr. Nader Massarweh, M.D., M.P.H. discusses the current prevailing philosophies in surgical quality improvement and the methods in that field that have risen in use in the last two decades. He evaluates alternative methods of quality improvement and their use in different medical settings, as well as how they may be applied to surgical practice.

Target Audience

This CME/CE activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, residents, fellows, and community providers.

Faculty and trainees within the Department of Medicine who are involved in the care of patients need to be regularly updated with the recent advances and guidelines in the fields of internal medicine and quality improvement to increase clinical knowledge, and to implement the advances and guidelines in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Define a conceptual model for evaluating surgical quality and for developing quality measures.

  • Recognize the limitations of current approaches used to measure surgical quality.

  • Explain alternative strategies that can be applied to measure surgical quality.
