Is Open Repair of Descending Thoracic and Thoracoabdominal Aortic Emergencies a Viable Option in an Era of Endovascular Therapy?

In this presentation, Dr. Leonard N. Girardi, Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Weill Cornell Medical Center, discusses recent trends in the repair of descending thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms. He compares the traditional method of performing an open repair with the newer method of performing a thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR), and the role of the two methods in current practice. Dr. Girardi also discusses the benefits and drawbacks of both methods of repair in specific settings, such as in mycotic thoracic aneurysms and acute complicated type B aneurysms.
