Firearm Injury Prevention Strategy and Process from the ACS Committee on Trauma

In this presentation, Dr. Ronald M. Stewart, Professor of Surgery at the Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio, discusses the issue of firearm injury in the United States and strategies for its prevention. He provides domestic and global statistics on firearm injury.

Dr. Stewart introduces the three principles of firearm injury reduction developed by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT) and discusses them in relation to the goals set by the committee. Dr. Stewart concludes his presentation by recognizing other organizations that are gathering and analyzing data to further the prevention of firearm injury.

Target Audience

This CME/CE activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, residents, fellows, and community providers.

Faculty and trainees within the Department of Medicine who are involved in the care of patients need to be regularly updated with the recent advances and guidelines in the fields of internal medicine and quality improvement to increase clinical knowledge, and to implement the advances and guidelines in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the current programs and strategic direction of the Firearm Injury Programs of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT).

  • Discuss the three principles developed by the ACS COT to reduce firearm injury in the United States.

  • Demonstrate the role of community engagement as a component of the public health model.
