How Can a Safety-Net Hospital Deliver High-Quality Care?

In this presentation, Dr. Lillian S. Kao, Professor, Department of Surgery, Section of Acute Care Surgery at McGovern Medical School, discusses quality improvement models for safety-net hospitals. Dr. Kao describes the Institute of Medicine’s Six Domains of Quality Care and how safety-net hospitals compare with other hospitals with regard to these standards. She discusses the benefits of establishing safety-net hospitals as learning healthcare systems where research is conducted to improve quality metrics at these hospitals. She also discusses how research on patient health disparities can be conducted at safety-net hospitals. She concludes her presentation by discussing the role of implementation science in quality improvement research.

Target Audience

This CME/CE activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, residents, fellows, and community providers.

Faculty and trainees within the Department of Medicine who are involved in the care of patients need to be regularly updated with the recent advances and guidelines in the fields of internal medicine and quality improvement to increase clinical knowledge, and to implement the advances and guidelines in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Discuss the six domains of quality care as put forth by the Institute of Medicine.

  • Evaluate the barriers to delivery of high-quality care at a safety-net hospital.

  • Discuss how quality improvement initiatives and research can be aligned to improve quality.
