Adolescent Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

In this presentation, Dr. Shawn Stafford, M.D. discusses bariatric surgery in the adolescent patient population, including indications and contraindications for the different procedures in this category and how this population responds compared to the adult population. He also presents studies and statistics about adolescent obesity in the U.S. and explains how this affects these children into adulthood.

Target Audience

This CME/CE activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, residents, fellows, and community providers.

Faculty and trainees within the Department of Medicine who are involved in the care of patients need to be regularly updated with the recent advances and guidelines in the fields of internal medicine and quality improvement to increase clinical knowledge, and to implement the advances and guidelines in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the efficacy of bariatric surgery in this patient population when compared with the adult population.

  • Review the components of an Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program.

  • Discuss the indications and contraindications for bariatric surgery in adolescents.
