ACGME Back to Bedside Initiative: Humanism Rounds

In this presentation from the Baylor College of Medicine Department of Medicine and Center for Professionalism, several speakers address the issue of physician burnout. Dr. Stacey R. Rose, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, introduces the three speakers and highlights the importance of physicians connecting with patients to improve physician well-being.

Dr. Kristy Rialon discusses the effects of physician burnout on residents, and how burnout impacts the attitude of residents toward patients. She also describes the ACGME Back to Bedside Initiative which aims at reducing burnout.

Drs. Brett Styskel and Reina Styskel, both internal medicine residents, detail the 2018 Back to Bedside Initiative: Humanism Rounds project that they led at Baylor College of Medicine to improve physician well-being.

Target Audience

This CME/CE activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, residents, fellows, and community providers.

Faculty and trainees within the Department of Medicine who are involved in the care of patients need to be regularly updated with the recent advances and guidelines in the fields of internal medicine and quality improvement to increase clinical knowledge, and to implement the advances and guidelines in clinical practice to enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Explain the mechanisms by which estrogen and its receptor stimulate breast cancer growth.

  • Discuss the crosstalk between estrogen receptor and growth factor receptor signaling pathways.

  • Discuss the mechanisms for resistance to endocrine therapy in breast cancer.
