Target Audience
This activity is designed for pediatric critical care physicians, neonatologists, pediatric cardiologists, fellows, residents, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of preterm and full-term neonates with congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathy.
Needs Statement
Healthcare professionals involved in the care of preterm and full-term neonates with congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathy need enhanced knowledge of congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathy in neonates, including the physiological interplay between cardiac function and neonatal development. There is also a need for shared understanding of targeted neonatal echocardiography and cardiac point-of-care ultrasound. Additionally, clinicians require access to curated, high-impact literature which highlights evolving best practices in mechanical support, neurocritical care, fluid management, and sedation protocols. This series provides a structured educational forum where patient cases, didactic presentations, and evidence-based management strategies are discussed collaboratively by the neonatology and pediatric cardiac intensive care teams. Through quarterly sessions, the series promotes multidisciplinary engagement and fosters the integration of medical and interventional strategies to optimize care for neonates with congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathy. By bringing together neonatologists, cardiologists, and cardiac intensivists, the series encourages the exchange of expertise, critical appraisal of current literature, and development of best practices, ultimately enhancing clinical decision-making and improving patient outcomes.
Educational Methods
Educational methods will include lectures, case presentations, literature review, and panel discussion.
Objectives
At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:
- Describe typical and atypical presentations of congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathy in neonates.
- Explain the interplay between neonatal physiology and congenital heart disease.
- Apply evidence-based medical and interventional strategies to the care of neonates with congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathy.
- Develop collaborative and multidisciplinary best practices for the management of neonates with congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathy.
Evaluation
Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
