Series Director

Michael E. Speer, MD

Target Audience
This activity is intended for physicians, residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, nurses, respiratory therapists, and dieticians in a Pediatrics or Neonatology clinical setting.
Needs Statement

This series is designed to address gaps in knowledge, competence, and performance among healthcare providers and trainees involved in neonatology research. Learners often lack sufficient understanding of how to design robust research studies, analyze data rigorously, prepare Institutional Review Board (IRB) proposals, and navigate the publication process. To meet these knowledge gaps, the series will provide foundational and practical instruction in research methodology, ethics, and dissemination. In terms of competence, participants frequently struggle to apply research skills in practice, such as formulating feasible research questions, conducting sound analyses, writing abstracts, presenting findings, and preparing grant proposals. This series will build practical competence through hands-on training, real-world examples, and structured mentorship. Finally, to improve performance, the series aims to help learners translate improved knowledge and skills into better research output that informs and enhances clinical practice. By completing higher-quality projects, publishing results, and securing funding, participants will contribute meaningful evidence that advances patient care.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include lectures.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

  • Describe the essential steps for designing a feasible and methodologically sound research study by formulating a clear research question, selecting an appropriate study design, and incorporating ethical and regulatory requirements
  • Apply and evaluate best practices in data analysis and interpretation to develop and critically assess research abstracts, posters, and manuscripts.
  • Execute a complete research project from proposal development through data collection, analysis, presentation, and submission for publication.
  • Translate and implement research findings into actionable improvements in neonatal clinical practice at the institutional level or within a specific specialty area, contributing to evidence-based care and quality improvement.
Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
