Target Audience

Needs Statement

To address the identified professional practice gaps in consistent application of evidence-based practices for the diagnosis, treatment, and needs of patients, particularly those who have disorders that are rare or seldom seen, learners require structured, high-quality educational interventions that emphasize both foundational and emerging neurosurgical knowledge. This includes exposure to rare and complex neurological disorders through case-based learning and expert-led discussions, as well as enhanced training in neuroimaging interpretation to improve diagnostic accuracy and distinguish between overlapping pathologies. Given the increasing complexity and subspecialization of neurosurgery, learners also need opportunities to engage with external experts who can provide diverse perspectives and fill experiential gaps in resident training. Additionally, education must incorporate evolving technologies, surgical innovations, and competency-based frameworks such as the ACGME Milestones and simulation-based learning. Emphasis on resident wellness, diversity, and retention—highlighted by national trends in neurosurgical education—further underscores the need for a comprehensive, learner-centered curriculum that prepares participants to deliver safe, effective, and equitable care. 

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include lectures and panel discussion.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

• Apply a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to the diagnosis and surgical treatment of neurological disorders.
• Critically evaluate findings from ongoing translational and clinical research in neurosurgery.
• Assess the benefits, limitations, and outcomes of specific neurosurgical treatment options to identify and implement cost-effective strategies that enhance patient care.
• Analyze safety, patient-centered, and cost data to optimize neurosurgical patient care.
• Recognize systemic barriers to care, including disparities in access, to improve overall patient outcomes.
