Social Determinants of Health in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Needs Statement

There is a critical gap in medical education regarding the care of individuals with disabilities, with national curriculum standards lacking specific training, leading to a shortage of physicians prepared to address the unique needs of this population. Medical students report inadequate education in this area, resulting in uncertainty in performing key clinical tasks and navigating care for patients with disabilities. Additionally, negative attitudes among experienced providers pose a significant barrier to quality care. To address these issues, an ECHO-style series will provide virtual sessions focused on improving provider knowledge and willingness to care for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) through expert-led lectures and case discussions, equipping primary care teams with practical strategies to enhance care delivery.

Learning Objective

At the conclusion of the activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe different social determinants of health for all people.
  • Illustrate ways in which particular social determinants of health have greater impacts on individuals with IDD.

Target Audience

Practicing physicians (internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine), nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, physician assistants, and other healthcare providers seeing individuals with IDD in the community

EDUCATIONAL METHODS

Lecture, Case Study, and ECHO.

ACTIVITY EVALUATION

Evaluation by questionnaire will address program content, presentation, and possible bias.

It is up to participants to determine whether the relationships influence the activity faculty with regard to exposition or conclusions. If at any time during this activity you feel that there has been commercial/promotional bias, notify the Activity Director or Activity Coordinator. Please answer the questions about balance and objectivity in the activity evaluation candidly.
